  • Lennie is a kind of Eve and Curley's Wife is a sort of serpent.
  • Man had almost everything and might have had everything in time, but he disobeyed and lost the majority of it.
  • Curley's wife tries to use Lennie in much the same way that George uses Slim in Chapter 3 to disasterous effects.
  • L&CW represent the lower sense-oriented aspects of man while George and Slim represent the higher nature of man.

  • there is the majority--the "normal"--and the people that are forced to the edges as "abnormal"
  • Might be according to race, economics, disability, sexuality, ideology, religion or some other "division"
3. Write a 1/2 page journal on a time that you have been or have seen someone forced to the margins.May also write about when being in the margins is a better thing or is enlightening.
4. Prep Chapter 4
  • Steinbeck is legitimizing the margins on the ranch by taking a break in the story and giving the betas some time to be human.
  • All the people in Chapter 4 are marginalized somehow or another.
5. Time to read Chapter 4
6. Brief Notes on 4:
  • Each of the characters is marginalized through no fault of his (or her) own. In a sense, Curley's Wife's beauty is the same as Crooks' being black is the same as Lennie's having a mental disability.
  • Steinbeck allows them to be 3-D and avoids stereotyping them
  • By allowing Crooks to have flaws, Steinbeck gives him humanity--he is real and not simply the token.
