Day 82: 10 May 2012

1. Discussed the structure of Berry's Argument

Paragraphs 1&2

  • Frames his argument with Blomfield's love of the work of farming and the people who do it
  • Premise: You can't be good at something that you don't love.
  • Statement: the love of farming is an economic necessity.
Paragraphs 3-5
  • Japan's recognition and attempt: the young didn't make the transition successfully.
  • Shifts focus to the US
  • Presents 3 obstacles to the solution: 1) politicians and economists are blind to the problem 2)the young people are "over-educated, ignorant" and "white of collar and soft of hands." 3)we want food without effort
Paragraphs 6-7 (extended metaphor)
  • Faust is us.
  • Mephistophiles is the policy makers and politicians
  • The witch is industrial food
Final 2 paragraphs: Explanation of the metaphor and possible solution
  • discussion of the cost of the agri-business solution
  • Conclusion: "We have ahead of us a lot of hard work that we are not going to be able to do with clean hands. We had better try to love it." Brings together elements of the whole work in to one sentence.

2. Discussion of how thesis and antithesis lead to synthesis (solution rather than compromise)
3. Journal responding to Berry's idea that we need to motivate more young people to farming and away from college.
4. Workshopping the new essays.

1. Prepped the Eulogies

  • discussion of the manner of death for all the major characters.
  • talked about how Cassius acts as his own prophet when he is comparing Caesar to a Colossus
  • Brutus and Cassius both end up dying dishonorable deaths.
2. Listened to the scenes
3. Discussed the important plot points for each of the major characters for a characterization essay.
4. Produced 2 possible thesis for review.
